Speeding by motorists is a worldwide phenomenon and Mérida is not exempt from this urban affliction. It’s a little different from most other Mexican cities in part due to the presence of a significant number of extremely rich individuals driving luxury European sports cars. I see more Lamborghinis and Maseratis in Merida than most other cities I know. Some, in emulation of their U.S. peers drive oversized pick-up trucks with modified exhaust systems to announce their presence from a couple of blocks away. Not all speeding is done by rich people driving expensive vehicles but it’s extremely common to see said drivers speeding and ignoring other rules of the road. It’s almost as if they believe the law doesn’t apply to them (apparently it doesn’t). Although the police maintain a high visibility throughout the city I have yet to see anyone pulled over for speeding (maybe the Lamborghinis and BMWs are too fast to catch). As to the source of the wealth required to buy a Maserati………that’s a question for another time.
