Izamal is known as Ciudad Amarilla (The Yellow City) as most of the walls in the city are painted yellow. There is a Tren Maya station which is located about 7km outside the city. The only feasible way to get to the city from the train station is by taxi at a set price of $120MXN. You can also share a taxi if you find other passengers willing to share. From Mérida and Valladolid there are second class buses and combis that will take you there in around one and a half hours.
Izamal is a a quiet city but has quite a few attractions. There are some Maya pyramids, a picturesque monastery and several very nice restuarantsi. The Maya language is spoken quite a bit in Izamal so if you want to pick up or practice some Maya phrases this is the place to do it.
If you feel hungry while in Izamal three of the best restaurants with traditional food are Ki’nich, La Casona de Izamal and Zamná. Bon apetit! Provecho!
