Mérida continues to grow rapidly with no signs of slowing down. While this has many advantages it also brings with it many challenges related to a rapidly increasing population. Many traffic routes become routinely clogged, noise, pollution and frustration increase daily. The status quo is untenable without dire consequences for the quality of life for all residents. A few things that the city could do to ameliorate the problems are listed below. These will not happen at least in the short term so it will be interesting to watch from the sidelines how this plays out
- Exclude private motor traffic within 4 blocks of Zocalo: exceptions; buses, taxis, deliveries, locals, emergency vehicles
- Designated exclusive bus lane on Paseo Montejo.
- No parking on Paseo Montejo or at least paid parking
- Enforcement of noise restrictions on traffic
- Extend bike lanes
- Exclusive bus lane on Avenida Tecnologico
- Paid parking within 10 blocks of centre
- Pedestrianize Corredor gastronomico
- More bus stops with protection against the sun and rain
- Did I say ten or nine?
