The Corredor Gastronomico located on Calle 47 has been developed to provide an area where tourists can find a range of restaurants along with coffee shops and bars. Overall the place is pretty upscale with prices to match. The actual street and sidewalks were completely redone but for some reason street parking and traffic were allowed when a pedestrian thoroughfare would have made much more sense. Urban studies worldwide have shown that motor traffic inhibits business while pedestrianized areas increase business. Looks Mérida didn’t get the memo. Despite this the Corredor Gastronomico is still a significant improvement over what was there previously. Maybe in the future we’ll see more improvements.
