Train to Mérida

The Tren Maya was inaugurated in 2024 just before the end of the term of the then sitting president. The routes are primarily in the Yucatan but also touch the states of Campeche, Tabasco and Chiapas. For tourists wishing to visit Mérida the most likely train that they would take is from the airport at Cancun. The journey from station to station is about 3.5-4 hours. However the usefulness is somewhat curtailed by the limited departures (currently 3 per day) and the fact that the stations are all significantly outside the towns that they serve. The main station for Mérida is at Teya on the periphery and after getting off the train you have to wait for a IE-Tram which takes another 35 minutes to get to the centre of Mérida. The train is worth taking as a novelty but in practice the buses from ADO are more comfortable, far cheaper and can get you door to door in a shorter time
