Biking in Mérida is not for the faint-hearted. However if you can withstand the heat and avoid the numerous potholes and other obstacles on the streets it is a lot of fun. Despite being the biggest city in the Yucatan Mérida is very easy to get around by bike with most destinations within a 30 minute radius. A small compensation for the heat is the fact that Mérida is extremely flat so you never have to put too much exertion into cycling.
Bikes can be rented at several locations near the Paseo Montejo and bike stores are numerous. There is a fairly good network of bike paths that link various parts of the city with the suburbs. The principal one being from the start of Paseo Montejo all the way up to the periferico in the north of the city. If you get tired or want help you can also put your bike on the rack of one of the VayVen blue buses (no extra charge). Although people bike at all times of the day the most comfortable time to bike is from around sunrise to about 10am. Biking in the dark is also fun as the temperature is cooler but you have to super vigilant about possible road hazards. Bon voyage!
